Fundus Examination

Fundus examination is the examination in which, with the use of special magnifying lenses i.e., 90D, 60D and 20D we examine the retina, the macula, and the optic nerve. During mydriasis, we use special drops that dilate the pupil, and the doctor can examine the retina to the extreme periphery. Usually without mydriasis the doctor can only see the optic nerve and the macula. For this reason, during your first visit to the ophthalmologist, the doctor may ask you to do a fundoscopy to get a complete picture of the retina and the macula. Patients who are diabetic or hypertensive should have dilated fundus exam at least once a year. If there are pathological findings such as bleeding and exudates, more frequent follow-up may be necessary.
