Fundus Photography

Photography of the fundus, and more specifically of the retina, can be done with various methods. There is color photography, infrared, as well as auto-fluorescence. The last technique is very important because it gives us important clinical diagnostic information in many diseases. For example, retinal photoreceptors in many genetic diseases collect “garbage” or otherwise lipofuscin which hyperfluoresces and gives us bright images in specific retinal diseases such as retinal dystrophies and hereditary diseases. Also, in patients with age-related macular degeneration we can observe and monitor areas of atrophy that lead to irreversible vision loss.
